Coroner findings and recommendations - inquest into deaths, 11 March 2006

Executive General Manager QR Passenger Paul Scurrah says QR will be looking very closely at the Coroner's findings and recommendations, received at midday today.

"This incident at Goodna was a tragedy on so many fronts - for the three children, for their families and also for our driver who suffers ongoing stress as a result of the accident.

QR has gone to great lengths to implement the recommendations of the Queensland Transport investigation following this accident. This is acknowledged in the Inquest findings today by the Coroner.

We will now look at anything further QR is able to act on as a result of today's findings.

Any action needs to be balanced with the consideration given to the trauma suffered by all those involved, including our train driver.

On a daily basis, our drivers are faced with very challenging and sometimes traumatic situations. Unfortunately, many of this incidents result in very tragic endings.

I take this opportunity to remind the whole community of the dangers in the rail corridor and plead with people to stay safe and stay well away from the rail corridor"

Minor derailment at Central Station

QR is investigating the cause of a minor derailment to the carriage of a train on the Cleveland line earlier today.

The incident happened just before 8.15 am, when one bogie on the second last carriage of a train derailed as the train was approaching Platform 4 at Central Station. The train, which was travelling to Bowen Hills, was moving at no more than 10 kilometres an hour at the time of the incident.

The driver and guard on board the train escorted passengers through the front entrance of each three carriage train set to ensure their safety.

Trains were diverted to other platforms at Central Station, and customers experienced delays of up to 10 minutes as speed restrictions were enforced to ensure safety.

Recovery crews are currently working to re-rail the train and QR is investigating any damage to the train and the track.

Local Kenmore Student Scores an Ekka RailSmart Bonus

Local Kenmore student Portia Sardinha's exceptional 'RailSmart' knowledge has done more than keep her safe, it also scored her a new laptop computer.

Twelve-year-old Ms Sardinha earned a perfect score in the RailSmart Pavilion questionnaire at this year's Ekka, to win the major prize.

QR Customer Service Group General Manager Theo Taifalos said Ms Sardinha was one of 7000 Queensland students who entered the competition.

"Being RailSmart has obvious benefits, it could save your life. But Ms Sardinha has also scored the added bonus of a new computer, which will further advance her knowledge and education," Mr Taifalos said.

"The QR RailSmart Pavilion allowed us the opportunity to reach thousands of Queensland students to reinforce the message of safety around our rail network.

The questions Ms Sardinha answered correctly were:

What do the flashing lights at a level crossing mean?

Which website should you visit to find out more about rail safety?

What colour is the line you need to stand behind until the train comes to a complete stop?

What can you do to be RailSmart?

Ms Sardinha's mother, Marini, said her daughter couldn't believe she had won the prize.

"It is really amazing, she just loves her new computer, it will really help with her education," Mrs Sardinha said.

"We have always been very conscious about safety, looking left and right and standing behind the yellow line.

"Winning this prize will make sure that rail safety is something we will never forget."
